Situation:

The set up for broadcasting the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was a herculean effort in scope and scale. These were the first Olympic Games ever to be held in South America and the fourth to be held in a developing country.

Connecting locations, events, control centers, and edit rooms to provide hundreds of hours of live coverage over more than two weeks demands a massive communications infrastructure to be up and running days before the games. Planning and developing the networking begins a year in advance.

Designing Fast, Cost-Effective Cable Solutions:

Amphenol Custom Cable helped to custom design, build, test and install a mobile cross-connect fiber distribution frame. The platform included an NG4 fiber distribution frame and NG4 panels cabled to LGX-style panels with custom modules. Specially designed, ruggedized pre-terminated MPO trunk cables were deployed for interconnection from the frame to remote data cabinets on location.

Working with the sports network team, Amphenol Custom Cable completed the cable design, development, and installation in less than 50 days.

The new frame, remote cabinet design, and cable system are reusable for easy retrieval and redeployment, saving time and money for coverage of future events. The cable system was easily redeployed for The 2018 PyeongChang XXIII Winter Olympics in South Korea, and will be used again at the next Olympic games.
